Doosan head coach Lee Seung-yeop met with the media before the 12th game of the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League against KIA at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on Sunday to announce Park’s first three starts. This is Park’s second career start since October 24, 2021, against LG Electronics (No. 9 right fielder).
Born in 2000, Park was selected by Doosan with the 49th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 KBO Draft out of Masango. Park made a name for himself in 2021, when he was trusted by former manager Kim Tae-hyung to make an impact in 34 games, batting .333 with two home runs and three stolen bases, and was on the roster for every postseason series, including the Wild Card Game, semifinals, playoffs, and Korean Series.
Park entered active duty in December 2021 and was designated for assignment in June. He then joined the Futures League, where he batted 3-for-7 with one home run and six RBIs in 20 games before finally receiving a call-up from manager Lee Seung-yeop on August 18. The day before, Park pinch-hit in the eighth inning against the Jamsil KIA and hit an RBI double in the ninth inning to prevent the team from losing the game. It was an at-bat that caught Lee’s eye.
“We haven’t had many players who have been consistently good at No. 3. “Park Ji-hoon has a good swing,” he said, “and the results of the players who are starting are not good. When the team is in a bad situation, a rookie can change the atmosphere. I want a young player to come out and do well in a tough time. I saw him follow the ball all the way after the second strike, so I’m looking forward to it.” Park gave special significance to the number three spot in the lineup.
Before the game, Park said, “I was surprised to hear that I would be playing No. 3, and I thought, ‘I’m playing No. 3 in the first team? It doesn’t come easily, so you have to grab it. I don’t care about the batting order, I’ll just focus on what I have to do. Yang Hyun-jong is a player I’ve only seen on TV, but with the help of the power analysis team, I’ll try to do well.”
Meanwhile, Doosan has selected 132-win left-hander Jang Won-jun to start the first game of the doubleheader against Samsung on Sept. 9. Foreign pitcher Brandon Waddell will start the second game. Lee said, “I received reports of ups and downs, and other players are not in good shape. I hope Jang Won-jun can play a good role as a big brother in difficult times.”
Doosan’s starting lineup against KIA’s Yang Hyun-jong is Jung Soo-bin (center field), Kim Jae-ho (shortstop), Park Ji-hoon (first base), Yang Ji (catcher), Jose Rojas (left field), Yang Seok-hwan (designated hitter), Heo Kyung-min (third base), Park Kye-beom (second base), and Cho Su-hyun (right field). The starting pitcher is Choi Won-jun.
