Kaoru Mitoma (26, Japan) has re-signed with Brighton after rejecting a bid from Manchester City.

The Seagulls announced on Tuesday (June 20) that they have signed Mitoma on a long-term contract. The contract will run for four years until June 2027,” the club announced. Mitoma joined the Seagulls in 2021 and will now spend the next six years in Brighton’s blue jersey, playing across Europe.

Mitoma is the most prolific single-season goal scorer by a Japanese soccer player in the English Premier League (EPL). In the 2022-23 season, he scored seven goals and provided six assists in 33 EPL appearances. Shinji Okazaki and Shinji Kagawa have previously scored as many as six goals in a season for Leicester City and Manchester United, respectively.

He’s been on fire this season, too. Mitoma has three goals and three assists in eight EPL appearances this 2023-24 season. He is the second highest goal scorer for Brighton after Evan Ferguson (4). Solly March (three goals) is level with Mitoma, while Joao Pedro, Pascal Gross, and Simon Adingra have two goals apiece.

Man City transfer rumors. Earlier this month, global media outlets such as Goal.com reported that “Man City are making a move for Mitoma. Man City manager Pep Guardiola is a big fan of Mitoma. Guardiola is looking to bolster his attacking lineup by signing Mitoma when the transfer window opens in January.”

Even if Mitoma were to move to the EPL champions, he wouldn’t be able to play in the starting lineup. Mitoma’s position is occupied by Jack Grealish and Jeremy Dockoo. Grillish is an England international striker, while Dockoo is a Belgian international striker.

Mitoma chose stability over challenge. Amid speculation that the ‘Doc’ at Brighton could be pushed out of the squad at Man City, Mitoma has extended his stay with the Seagulls.짱구카지노

Brighton head coach Roberto De Jervi said: “It’s great news that Mitoma has re-signed. He is one of our best players. We are delighted to welcome him back for another year.” De Jervi rushed to the spot where Mitoma was filming his ‘wardrobe change’ and gave him a big hug.

Brighton’s next opponent is City. Brighton and City will face off in the ninth round of the EPL on Nov. 21 at 11 p.m. at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England. Brighton is in sixth place with 16 points and City is in third place with 18 points. The outcome of this match could flip the positions of both teams.

Mitoma has made just one appearance against City. He played the full 90 minutes against City in round 32 of the 2022-23 season, but did not record a goal or an assist. Brighton earned a 1-1 draw in that match thanks to a fantastic mid-range strike from Julio Enciso. Mitoma will be looking for his first attacking point in his second appearance against City.
